Betty Jane Maxwell

Betty Jane Maxwell (also known as “Janie”), 85, of Long Valley, NJ, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, July 22, 2023 with her family by her side.

Born August 25, 1937 in Hacklebarney, NJ she was a daughter of the late Lloyd and Essie (Wortman) Hildebrant.

Betty Jane’s husband, Edward D. Maxwell died in 1991. In addition to her husband, a daughter, Susan M. Brink, passed in 2010; a brother Lloyd (Junie) and a sister, Pearl died earlier.

Betty Jane, retired from Old Farmer’s Road School after 25 ½ years of service as cook and cafeteria manager. Prior to that time, she worked for 17 years as a waitress at Larison’s Turkey Farm, a baker at Long Valley Bagel Shop, was a CNA at Little Brook Nursing Home and bus driver for Valley Brook Academy.

She was a member of the High Bridge Reformed Church in High Bridge, NJ.  Also a lifetime member of the Long Valley Fire Company’s Ladies Auxiliary.

Betty was described as “sassy” and “little but mighty”.  Her greatest joys were spending time with family and friends at celebrations and dinners.

Betty Jane always looked forward to going to the casinos, bus trips, and bingo. On Monday and Friday nights you could always find “Janie” glued to her tv watching WWE!  She loved baking and will always be remembered for the specialty cakes decorated lovingly for each grandchild for their birthday. 

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Hoffman and her husband, Larry of Port Murray, NJ; a son, Edward and his wife, Sue of Hope, NJ. Grandchildren, Jennifer Sodtalbers and husband, Rick, William Brink and wife, Lindsay, Justin Hoffman and wife, Jordan, Andrew Hoffman and wife, Stephanie, Russ, Julia, Autumn Maxwell, and great grandchildren, Arica and Elizabeth Sodtalbers, Blake Brink and Rowan Hoffman. 

Visitation will be held 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm Thursday, July 27 at Naughright-Scarponi Funeral Home, 66 Main Street, High Bridge, NJ 08829. Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 28 in the Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Lower Valley Cemetery, Califon, NJ.
