It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Donald M. Kniffen Jr., age 73, of Union Township, NJ, on December 17, 2025, at Hunterdon Medical Center. Born on January 28, 1952, in New Brunswick, NJ, Donald spent his early years in Morganville before settling in Union Township in 1996.
A devoted husband to Anita Mazakas for 39 years, Donald was cherished by his family and friends. He was the beloved son of the late Donald M. and Josephine Tamagna Kniffen, and a caring brother to Daniel Kniffen and his wife Ann Swenker of Spring Mills, PA. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Mary Mazakas of Berlin, NJ.
Donald attended Brookdale Community College and built a distinguished career as a Head Heardsman within the animal science department at Rutgers University Cook College, where he held numerous management roles overseeing livestock herds and flocks. He was President of New Jersey Hampshire Sheep Breeders Association. His passion for agriculture extended beyond his professional life—he was co-owner of Kniffen Hampshire Sheep Breeders and a dedicated member of the New Jersey Sheep Breeders Association. Donald was well-known for his expertise in sheep showing and shearing, and his involvement with the NJ Wool Pool at Rutgers.
A true steward of the land, Donald found joy working on his family’s farm in Marlboro, NJ, and contributed to several large farms in the region, including Whitehouse Station. His commitment to the Hunterdon County 4H and the local agricultural community touched many lives.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday, December 22, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. at Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home, 26 Main Street, Lebanon, NJ. Interment will be private.
Donald will be remembered for his kindness, dedication, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his loved ones and the community he served.
