George Aanonsen Obituary

George Christian Aanonsen, age 89, of Bridgewater, NJ passed away peacefully, surrounded by the loving care of all his children, on April 14, 2023.

He was born on October 10, 1933 in Jersey City, NJ, where he spent his childhood. He was the son of the late Alfred and Hedwig (Rasmussen) Aanonsen, and the younger brother of the late Herbert Aanonsen and the late Catherine (Aanonsen) Lillis.

His beloved wife, Mabel Marlene (Jay) Aanonsen passed away in 2016 after 57 years of marriage.

George was a longtime resident of Clinton, NJ where he lovingly raised his family, which was a true gift to his children as they have all developed such fond friendships and memories from growing up in this beautiful small town.

George had a successful career in the plastics industry where he was a mold designer at companies including the Ideal Toy Company.

He served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1954, at sea on the USS Kula Gulf for almost two years of his enlistment.  He was very proud of his time as a sailor.

George was an involved and fun father and was very active in his children’s activities, including the Boy Scouts, the YMCA Indian Guides and the Community Athletics. He loved going to LBI with his wife, as it was where they got engaged, and it continued to be a special place for them.  George was very committed to his wife Mabel and was a loyal and loving caretaker for her as her health declined.

Survivors include his four children, Paul Aanonsen of Easton, MD, Amy Aanonsen of Basking Ridge, NJ, Jennifer Szachara and her husband Scott of Chantilly, VA, and Patty Jennings and her husband Chris of Clinton, NJ; his granddaughters who he adored, Veronica Szachara, Evelyn Szachara and Ava Szachara; and his many cherished nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.  He is also survived by his friends including Steve Loflin and Ceil Mulvey (his best buddy); and his treasured niece Donna (Lillis) Smithers.

Calling hours will take place on Saturday, April 22, 2023 from 10am – 12pm with a funeral service at 12pm - all to be held at Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home, 26 Main Street, Lebanon, NJ.

Interment will be private.
