Ida W. Hauchwitz, age 88, passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at United Methodist Communities at Bristol Glen in Newton, NJ.
She was born on May 15, 1934 in Schillosaden, Lithuania in the district of Wilkowischken, known today as Vilkaviskis. She was the daughter of the late Albert and Olga Schmidt Hannemann. Her family was of German descent and immigrated back to Germany, where she grew up and married her beloved husband, Gustav Hauchwitz.
Ida immigrated to the United States in 1957 with Gustav, and infant daughter Sigrid Beate. They lived for many years in Elizabeth, before moving to Union, NJ. She resided currently at Bristol Glen in Newton, NJ for the last several years, moving from Lebanon Borough, NJ.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Gustav Hauchwitz in 1989, beloved daughter Sigrid Hallam in 2000, and beloved long time companion since 1991, “Grandpa Bernie”, Bernhard Hammernik in 2014.
Ida worked as a dressmaker/seamstress for many years in Elizabeth, NJ. She also worked as a cook in a nursing home and many other jobs until her retirement. After her retirement she continued working as a nanny and in eldercare.
She was a former member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Elizabeth, NJ, the Round Valley United Methodist Church in Lebanon, NJ and the Lebanon Reformed Church in Lebanon, NJ.
Ida enjoyed cooking, sewing and gardening. She especially enjoyed feeding family and friends her German specialties with great joy.
Survivors include one daughter; Christine Mooney and her husband Sean of Morristown, NJ and son-in-law John Hallam of Elk Grove, CA, three grandchildren she was very proud of; Megan Samson and her husband Joe of Kirkland, WA, Clare Mooney of Jersey City, NJ and Alison Mooney and her husband David Graafland of New York, NY. two great-grandchildren; Madelyn Bea Samson and Jacob William Samson. One brother; Egon Hannemann & one sister; Edith Ratschker both living in Germany.
A private memorial service and interment will take place at a later date.
