John Jorgen Hansen

John J. Hansen, age 99, of Clinton Twp., NJ passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2022 at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ.

John was born on February 4, 1923 in Skovshoved, Denmark.  He came to the U.S. in 1929 along with his parents, Karl and Christina Hansen, and brother, Kai.  He lived in Newark, NJ, Dunkirk, NY and Scotch Plains, NJ before moving to Linden, NJ in 1993 and then to Annandale, NJ in 2013.

He joined the Navy in 1940 and was on the repair ship, USS Argonne when the attack occurred at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.  He later served on the minesweeper USS Skylark, of which he was most proud. 

He was beloved husband to Mary Hansen.  Father of the late Richard C. Hansen and adored stepfather to Kenneth Fischer (Jane) and Karen Mealey.  Loving grandfather to Chrissy, Jeff, Michael and Kurt and great-grandfather to Trey, Colby and Lainey.

John worked for American Can Co., Tose and Smith Transfer before retiring in 1986. 

He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, NJ Chapter 2, of which he had been Secretary/Treasurer.  He was also a member of the Naval Minewarfare Association, American Legion Post 328 in Clark, The Deutscher Club of Clark, the Elks, the Teamsters Retiree Club and the Gem Vac Vets in Glen Gardner. 

John was an avid reader, especially enjoying James Patterson novels, and he really loved having a good time with his family and friends, especially cocktail hour and game nights. 

Calling hours will take place on Sunday, October 9, 2022 from 2-4pm with funeral service at 4pm at Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home, 26 Main Street, Lebanon, NJ.  Interment will be on Friday, October 14, 2022 at 1:30pm at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ.
