John ‘Jack’ Alan Van Doren, age 80, of Clinton Township, NJ passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at Complete Care at Green Knoll in Bridgewater, NJ.
He was born on June 28, 1943 in Somerville, NJ. He was a lifelong resident of Hunterdon County and resided in Clinton Township for the past 54 years.
He was the son of the late Benjamin Van Doren and Ida Ramsey Van Doren.
Jack was the husband of Judy E. Powers Van Doren, celebrating 57 years of marriage.
He was a 1961 graduate of North Hunterdon Regional High School in Annandale, NJ where he excelled in athletics, specifically wrestling. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from Drexel University.
He was a Marine Corps Veteran, serving during Vietnam as a 2nd Lieutenant and was discharged as Captain.
Jack was part of the second generation of the family business, helping run Van Doren Oil Co. in Whitehouse Station, NJ until his retirement in 2018.
Memberships include past member of the Fuel Merchants Association of New Jersey where he was a longtime trustee for Hunterdon County. He was also a past member of the North Hunterdon Regional High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee. Jack leaves behind a legacy in North Hunterdon athletics after coaching with their youth wrestling program for decades.
Jack was an athlete throughout his life as he enjoyed water skiing, ziplining, biking, golfing and canoeing. He also loved gardening and was known for his large garden. He was a frequent fan and supporter of all his grandchildren’s athletic activities.
Survivors in addition to his loving wife include two children; Cindy Macaulay and her husband Angus of Lebanon, NJ and Michael Van Doren and his wife Jennifer of Lebanon, NJ. Five grandchildren; Maxwell Macaulay, Jensen Macaulay, Olivia Van Doren, Jack Van Doren and Jodie Van Doren. Three siblings; Benjamin R. Van Doren and his wife Judith of Lebanon, NJ, Richard Van Doren of North Branch, NJ and Vanessa Van Doren of North Branch, NJ. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law; Robert Powers and his wife Patricia of Manahawkin, NJ, Thomas Powers and his wife Brenda of Hellertown, PA and sister-in-law Deborah McDonald and her husband James of Clinton, NJ. Twenty nieces and nephews, Thirty-seven great nieces and great nephews and two great-great nieces and great-great nephews. He is also survived by his beloved dog; Benji.
Predeceased by his son; Scott Van Doren who passed away in 1991.
Calling hours will take place on Monday, January 1, 2024 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home, 26 Main Street, Lebanon, NJ. Funeral Service will be Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at 11am also at the Funeral Home. Interment at Lebanon Reformed Cemetery on Brunswick Avenue in Lebanon, NJ.
Memorials can be made to the Scott Van Doren Memorial Scholarship Fund, 60 Deer Hill Road, Lebanon, NJ 08833. The scholarship is given to male and female North Hunterdon wrestlers attending college.
