Mawalal ‘Rome’ ‘Nana’ Kanhai, age 80, of Clinton, NJ passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on January 22, 1943 in Curepe, Trinidad.  He lived in Trinidad for most of his life and immigrated to the Clinton, NJ in November, 2007.

He was the son of the late Lakicharon Kanhai and late Bhago Kanhai. Mother maiden name Nanan.

He was the husband of Liloutie ‘Janet’ Rohit Kanhai, celebrating 39 years of marriage.

While in Trinidad, Rome worked as a mechanic at Ramgoolie Repair Shop until his retirement.

Rome loved cooking and watching TV, especially Westerns.  He also loved music in particular Mohammad Rafi songs. 

Survivors in addition to his loving wife include two children; Gangadai Ramsood and her husband Mohan of Clinton, NJ and Ganesh Kanhai and his wife Katyana of Trinidad.  Four grandchildren; Chetram ‘Phillip’ Ramsood, Mukesh ‘Josh’ Ramsood, Vidya ‘Isabella’ Ramsood and Shiva ‘Rick’ Kanhai.  He is also survived by beloved 6 brothers (Oudit, late Ramjewan, late Chotelal, Bhola, Sankar, Ramdat) and 1 sister (Tarmatie (Matey) Harriram. Bother in law of (Kamla, Maya, Sandra, Soma, Garpat Harriram) he has 16 nieces and 7 nephews including Angie Kanhai.

Calling hours will be Thursday, September 7, 2023 from 6-9pm at Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home, 26 Main Street, Lebanon, NJ.  Funeral Service will take place on Friday, September 8, 2023 from 9am-11am at Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home, 26 Main Street, Lebanon, NJ.  Immediately following cremation at Somerset Hills Memorial Park, 95 Mt. Airy Road, Basking Ridge, NJ.
