Michael Hanily Obituary

Michael (Mike) M. Hanily, age 66, of Clinton Twp., NJ, passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at home, surrounded by his loving family. 

Mike was born on June 3, 1959 in Newark, NJ to the late Martin and Bessie (Bray) Hanily. He spent his childhood in Irvington and Maplewood, NJ, with the early years of his married life spent in Morris County, NJ. He resided with his family in Clinton Twp., NJ for the past 25 years. 

Mike was the loving husband of Denise (Lavook) Hanily, and celebrated 37 loving years of marriage. 

Mike started his career in audio and video electronics prior to beginning his favorite job as a stay at-home dad. Mike was devoted to his family and loved spending time with his daughters. He enjoyed spending his birthday and Father’s Day at his daughters’ softball games and dance recitals; He was the best softball dad. He could not have been more proud of both of his daughters who have gone on to become a nurse and a speech-language pathologist. 

Mike loved following his favorite sports teams; The New York Rangers, Yankees, and Kansas City Chiefs. He was very smart and excelled at trivia questions and crossword puzzles. He loved watching game shows and beating the buzzer to answer Jeopardy questions. Mike loved rewatching his favorite movies, especially Jaws, and looked forward to Shark Week every year. 

Mike was an avid cook and grill master. He had a passion for music, a talent for playing guitar, and played in a band many years ago. He loved putting together albums for his daughters to introduce them to new music. He had a love for photography and would never miss an opportunity to capture and witness a good sunset. His photos are displayed all throughout the family home.

In addition to his loving wife, Mike is survived by two beloved daughters, Katie Michele Hanily and Megan Ann Hanily; One sibling, Pat Benedict (partner John Cook), and a late sister, Michele McNany; Two brother-in-laws, Dennis McNany and Rob Lavook (married to Julie Lavook); Nieces and nephews, Ryan McNany, Scott McNany, DJ McNany, Brian Benedict, Sean Benedict, Ashlee Lavook, Amanda Lavook, Sean Lavook and Madison Lavook, as well as many great-nieces and nephews. Mike is also survived by his beloved dog, Jasper, as well as many loving friends. 

A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at the Hanily family home, 4 Old Blossom Hill Rd., Lebanon, NJ, on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at 2pm. Interment will be private.
