Naomi Ruth Murphy

Naomi Ruth Murphy, 90, of Califon, NJ went into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, November 2, 2021.

Born on September 8, 1931 in Middlecreek, PA to parents Claude and Edith Murphy, Naomi was one of five children.

In 1940, Naomi’s family moved to Zarephath, NJ where she attended Alma White Preparatory School. She sang with her family on the church radio station, WAWZ.  She reminisced often about her life there in the church community and had fond memories of the people she came to know. One of those special people was the campus minister, I.L. Wilson who she came to look up to as a “Godly, kind, caring minister”. She worked in the church book bindery as well as doing the cooking, cleaning, and laundry in addition to teaching 3rd and 4th grades in the Bound Brook Temple. Isaiah 55:12 and Mark 10:14-16 were two of her favorite Bible verses.

Naomi married and moved to a farm in Peapack-Gladstone, NJ where she was a homemaker and mother of three children. She took in laundry for local families, in addition to baking, canning, gardening and lovingly caring for her home and family.

In 1998 she moved to Califon, NJ where she lived up until her death. Naomi enjoyed bird watching, oil painting, baking cookies and listening to Gospel music and Christian programming.  Prayer was a daily part of her life and sustained her through difficult times in her life.

She was sister to Alice Klein of Richmond, VA, the late Elmer Murphy of Kelseyville, CA, Lester Murphy of Califon, NJ and Bessie Hoffman of Branchburg, NJ.

She leaves behind her three children, Luther Hellyer of Succasunna, NJ, Rebecca Barbieri of Port Murray, NJ and Katherine Hoffman of Bangor, PA and their spouses, and three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside service and Interment will take place on Friday, November 5, 2021 at 11am at Fairmount Rural Cemetery in Califon, NJ.
