Ralph S. Hartz, age 87, of Martinsville, New Jersey, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, April 27, 2020.
He was born on October 17, 1932 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He resided in Martinsville, New Jersey for the past 21 years after previously residing in Bridgewater, New Jersey.
Ralph is survived by his beloved wife, Loretta (Sasso) Hartz, to whom he was married for over 62 years. They raised three loving daughters: Judith Hartz, Diane (Hartz) Mehrmann (Brant), and Laura Hartz (John LaNoce). He was the dear grandfather to grandsons Justin and Kyle Mehrmann, and granddaughter Jessica LaNoce. He is also survived by many beloved cousins.
Ralph was a United States Air Force Veteran, serving as Staff Sergeant from 1949 to 1953. He graduated from Monmouth University with a degree in physics. He worked as an Engineer for RCA in Somerville, New Jersey, for many years. After his retirement, he worked as an Instructor at Somerset County Technical Institute. He belonged to the parish of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Raritan, New Jersey.
Ralph had a true zest for life, a kind heart, a quick wit and a brilliant mind. He had a passion for learning and trying new things. He enjoyed several hobbies, including computers, reading and fishing with his grandchildren. Earlier in his life he was an avid runner and liked to ski and play tennis. He had an appreciation for all types of music, especially jazz and classical. Ralph was devoted to and loved his family more than anything, and treasured spending time with his grandchildren, who adore their “Pop Pop.”
He was the son of the late David and Helen (Rompala) Hartz and is predeceased by his sister, Barbara Bassett.
Due to the current restrictions regarding Coronavirus, all services will be private. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the American Heart Association.
