Richard Hanson Obituary

Richard “Dick” R. Hanson, age 88, of Tewksbury Twp., NJ, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2025, at home, with his loving daughters and dog, Maddie by his side.

Richard was born on February 24, 1937, in Rahway, NJ, to the late Theodore and Ida (Weir) Hanson. He grew up in Union, NJ, before moving to Bernardsville, NJ in 1969. In November of 1989, Barbara and Dick moved to their dream home in Oldwick, NJ.

Richard was the beloved husband of Barbara (Krause) Hanson. They celebrated 60 years of marriage together before Barbara’s passing in 2024.

Richard enlisted in the Army on August 13, 1958 and was honorably discharged on August 12, 1960. He then started his career at Westinghouse Elevator as an elevator repairman.  Westinghouse became Schindler Elevator where he held the title of Manager for many years.  He retired in 1997 and always enjoyed his work.  Unbeknownst to Barbara, he would take hisdaughters and their friends on rides on top of the elevators, then go to Burger King or Lori’s Hot Dogs and a final stop at Ely’s Tropical Fish store.

Richard was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons. He was also a proud union member of Local No. 1 International Union of Elevator Constructors. Everyone loved Richard, he had a smile on his face and was always happy to help.

Richard loved fixing things around his home and enjoyed completing (sometimes) renovation projects with his wife, Barbara. He also enjoyed fixing all types of cars over the years. He loved his pets dearly, especially his dogs Ted, Jake and Maddie and his beloved cat Frosty. He loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He really enjoyed Barbara’s cooking (lots of butter) and big holiday meals with lots of pierogi and libations! He enjoyed playing the trumpet since he was a young boy and loved listening to all kinds of music.

Richard is survived by his two daughters, Jacqueline Zimmerman of Califon, NJ, and Amanda Rambo and her husband, David, of Califon, NJ.  His two grandchildren, Kathryn and Abigail Rambo. His great-grandchildren, Wesley and Siobhan Rambo. His sister, Barbara Wheatley of Cranford, NJ. He is also survived by his loving extended family.  In addition to his wife, Richard is predeceased by his brother-in-law, Alan Wheatley.

A private memorial will be held at a later date.
