Roy Smith Obituary

Roy J. Smith, age 64, longtime resident of Annandale, NJ, passed away on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at St. Luke’s University Hospital in Bethlehem, PA, surrounded by his beloved niece and nephew and their families.

He was born on August 13, 1957 in Flemington, NJ.  He lived in Annandale, NJ for most of his life.

He was the son of the late Marvin and Alma Hoffman Smith.

Roy was a graduate of North Hunterdon Regional High School.

He was a Warehouse Supervisor for RTS Packaging in Kingwood, NJ until his retirement. For many years, he also worked as a security guard at the Flemington Fair Grounds. He also enjoyed volunteering at the Califon Carnival for many years. 

Roy was a member of Annandale Hose Co. He joined in 1975 and was active until his retirement in 2013. During that time, he was the recipient of the Vollers Award and was also Fire Fighter of the year in 2009. He also received the Highest Responder award in 2006, 2007 and 2008 during his membership. Roy’s heroic efforts were recognized when he assisted in a lifesaving rescue in 1993 when a woman was trapped in her car with a live wire surrounding her car. He was also a member of Pattenburg Volunteer Fire Company where he enjoyed playing Santa for many years. He also was on the committee to obtain Squad 25, which he was very proud of.

Roy’s biggest passion in life was auto racing. He worked in the pit crew at the Flemington Speedway on Willie Osmun’s team. He also loved the Miami Dolphins and the New York Mets.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews including William C. Smith of Franklin, NJ, Victoria Fritz and her boyfriend Brian Lamb of Hellertown, PA and Rachael Compos and her husband Josh of Bethlehem Twp., PA. Great-nieces and great-nephews; Thomas Fritz, Josalyn Fritz and Xavier Fritz, Myia Smith, Zara Smith, Brianne Henley, Ashley Henley, Erin Henley and Faith Compos. He is also survived by four brothers; Tony Smith and his wife Mary of NV, Nelson Smith and his wife Jackie of Washington, NJ, John Smith and his wife Sandra of HI and Samuel Smith of Flemington, NJ.

Predeceased in addition to his parents by three siblings; William C. Smith Sr., Thomas Smith and Alice Vogel. 

Calling hours will take place on Sunday, November 14, 2021 from 1-3pm with Firemen’s Funeral service at 3pm.  All at Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home, 26 Main Street, Lebanon, NJ. Following the funeral service, everyone will be invited to follow the Firemen’s Funeral procession to Annandale Hose Co. for the last call.
