Ruth Alpaugh Obituary

Ruth E. Alpaugh, age 103, of High Bridge, NJ passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at the Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Twp., NJ.

She was born on June 24, 1916 in Califon, NJ.

She was the daughter of the late Lester M. and Mabel Trimmer Apgar.

Ruth spent her childhood in Califon, NJ as her father owned and operated his General Store, now Rambo’s Country Store.  In recent years, she remembered her house on Main Street, her paper route (which kept her in shape), and bus rides back and forth from High Bridge High School.

She attended Trenton State College and became a teacher.  She taught primary grades in Annandale, Whitehouse and High Bridge.  She taught at High Bridge Elementary School from 1946 to 1990, where she taught 2nd grade for many years.

She married George N. Alpaugh (deceased 1996) in 1939.  They lived in South Jersey, but settled in High Bridge, NJ where they raised two sons, George Lester Alpaugh and Warren A. Alpaugh.

It is difficult to record such a long life and it is impossible to capture all experiences, interests and value of Ruth’s long life.

Ruth’s memberships include High Bridge United Methodist Church where she was Past-President of their Women’s Society, Order of the Eastern Star Hobart Chapter where she served as Worthy Matron and received her 70 year pin just weeks ago for her commitment to the organization.

Ruth had many loves in life including spending summers at Long Beach Island, taking trips with her husband after retirement, volunteering with Meals on Wheels and attending the Passion Play in Germany. Her most extensive impacts were on the many students influenced by her teaching – she loved her kids.

Survivors include her two sons; George Lester Alpaugh and his wife Pat of Stockton, NJ and Warren A. Alpaugh and his wife Sharon of Chenango Forks, NY.  Three grandsons; Andy Alpaugh and his wife Sara of Washington, NJ, Robin Alpaugh of Binghamton, NY and Craig Alpaugh and his wife Angela of Athens, NY.  Two great-grandchildren; Samuel and Kate.

Predeceased in addition to her husband by one brother; Clifford Apgar.

Calling hours will take place on Monday, March 16, 2020 from 2-4 pm with funeral service at 4 pm.  All at Naughright-Scarponi Funeral Home, 66 Main Street, High Bridge, NJ.  Interment will be private.

Memorials in lieu of flowers can be made to High Bridge United Methodist Church, 36 Church Street, High Bridge, NJ 08829.

Due the current health concerns no post funeral gathering is planned.
