Thomas Koven Obituary

Thomas Koven, age 78, of Bethlehem Twp., NJ passed away on April 4, 2023 at home.

He was born on September 13, 1944 in Orange, NJ.  He spent his childhood in Morris County, NJ and resided in Hampton, NJ since 1969.

He was the son of the late Gustav and Jane Crowley Koven.

Thomas was the husband of Barbara Georgia Cochrane, celebrating 32 years together. 

He was a Sea Captain during the 70s, 80s and 90s, spending his time as a Captain in the Caribbean and in Central and South America.

Thomas is described by a friend as a very unique character with an unforgettable voice and laugh who was a passionate environmentalist. He could be depended on to work tirelessly on projects to protect his community, neighborhood and friends who loved him for it.  He was involved with the township’s Environmental Commission , N J Highlands Coalition (Policy Committee) and on the local Open Space Committee. He also certified all the vernal ponds in the area. 

He loved sailing, planting chestnut trees and fixing stereos.  He was very handy and enjoyed woodworking and gardening.  He was highly talented and transformed a barn into his house and home.  He was a quiet person but very knowledgeable about many things.

He is survived by his loving wife and their son Tomaso Koven of Honesdale, PA, step-daughter Geraldine Schreiber of Rome, Italy, and grandson, Ludovico.  He is also survived by one brother; Gus Koven and his wife Liza of Green Village, NJ, his sister-in-law; Stephanie Koven and a dozen nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by three siblings Ted Koven, Gay Koven Klipstein and Constance Koven. 

All services will be private. 

Arrangements are under the direction of Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home in Lebanon, NJ.
